Day 20 - Engine room tour

So many things on the ship are impressive: the dredgeing equipment, the recreation rooms, the food (in case you haven’t already noticed); and today we got to find out exactly what makes the RV Investigator tick.

Jeremy Horowitz’s talk

Jeremy (my room mate) gave a great talk on the biodiversity black spots in the ocean. Most of what we know is limited by observations that are mainly clustered along coastlines and at shallow depths. Data points decrease rapidly with depth due to the difficulty of sampling.

Jeremy is particularly interested in deep sea black corals which inhabit water depths from 800m to 4km. He is researching the degree of similarity in black corals throughout the world’s oceans to classify a phylum tree. Jeremy is currently undertaking his PhD at James Cook University Townsville.
